Description of Guatemala
It’s probably fair to say that political unrest in Guatemala has seen the country removed from the top-ten lists of most property investors, but there are still opportunities out there for those that get it right. For example, rent yields in the country’s main hubs like Lake Atitlan and the city of Antigua have proved surprisingly consistent. And while there aren’t any desirable beaches to speak of, the tourism trade brought in by the ancient Mayan origins of Guatemala represents a solid opportunity for short-term rental property investment. Taxes remain rather on the high side at a flat rate of 31 per cent for international investors, but this is often augmented by the fact that the properties themselves are rarely disagreeable.
