If you set yourself timescales and give yourself checklists of activities to tick off, you will probably feel a lot more in control of the whole home move process. There will inevitably be the odd disaster along the way, but if you're in control then it should be manageable.

The Move countdown relates purely to the process of moving your life and belongings from one home to another. It does not cover other activities that are involved in the buying or selling transaction and you should remember that there are a lot of other things going on which may alter your timeframes slightly.

We have tried to indicate when we feel it is a good time to start an activity or undertake a specific task. This may or may not be wholly appropriate for you. As a general rule, it is OK to get ahead of yourself. You don't want to be packed up and ready to move four months before you start looking mind you, so don't get too carried away.

We have broken the time prior to your move down into 8 periods that are listed at the top of the page, as well as other sections covering what to do on the day and after the event. Follow all the links in order and we are reasonably confident that you will get through your move fairly efficiently. If you disagree, let us know and we will try to improve the ordering of activities.

After you have finished reading that, there is a section covering what to do on the day and a section giving some hopefully helpful hints for what to do after the event for you to get your teeth stuck into.
