Most people will elect to use a removal service when it comes to moving home. If you decide to let them help you relocate, then you will have to choose from a wide range of removal services companies.

Where to look
Try looking both in the place you are moving from and the area you are moving to. It can be surprising how big the price variation can be.

Use SiteFinder to find the websites of some of the larger removal service companies as well as some other sites that are useful for finding local businesses.

Book well in advance for better prices. An absolute minimum is two weeks, but if you leave it late, be prepared to pay more. If a company thinks you are going to struggle to find a competitor able to take your custom, then they may try charging you over the odds.

Peak times for moving home are Bank holidays, school half term holidays and Fridays (these allow people to make a long weekend of it). Avoid these times if you can - companies are booked up well in advance, the demand causes prices to rise and let's face it, the traffic is probably going to be worse then anyway.

Check their credentials
How do you know if Reliable Ron's Rapid Removals service will live up to its name? The first thing you should do is find out whether they are a BAR accredited business. BAR (The British Association of Removers) is the trade association for the removals and storage industry. While membership does not guarantee your glassware won't get broken, it does ensure that the company meets certain professional standards. Find out more about BAR.

Things to consider
The most important factor for most people is price. Click here to find out about getting quotations from removals companies. In theory, all companies should be able to get all your belongings from A to B in a roughly equivalent time, without altering the condition of your property. What you pay more for is insurance cover, reputation and different levels of service.

Check what insurance they have to cover injuries to their staff during the move. You don't want to find you are liable for the slipped disk that the removal guy suffered when he tripped over that dodgy floorboard in your house.

Ask them for the details of previous customers who can be contacted for references. Anyone confident of their service will usually be happy to oblige.

Consider the size of the organisation. You sometimes pay a little more for a well-known national chain. If you feel that an established complaints and grievance system is worth it and you also want to have less risk of staff shortages due to illness, then this may be the way to go.
